Scam check · payment-request scam

Is this Venmo request a scam?

Possibly. Common Venmo scams include random payment requests from strangers (hoping you'll pay by mistake), fake “Venmo” texts about a “payment on hold” with a phishing link, and “accidental” payments where someone “over-sends” you and asks you to send the difference back — before their original transfer reverses. There are also “Venmo Business” upgrade cons and prize/“free money” requests that ask you to pay a fee first.

A legitimate Venmo request comes from someone you actually owe, and Venmo transactions between friends have no buyer protection, so treat it like cash. Venmo won't text you a link to “release” funds or ask you to pay to receive money. Decline requests from anyone you don't recognise, and never send back an “overpayment.” If a message includes a link, paste it into a scam check before opening it.
